Mr. Richard L. Carter, 73, of Wagner Street, Fort Plain, New York died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Little Falls Hospital. Born on September 26, 1935 in Gowanda, NY, he is the son of Richard P. Carter and Olive Kelsey Carter. He was a graduate of Fort Plain Central School, class of 1953 and was a lifetime resident of Fort Plain. Mr. Carter was self-employed as a plumbing and heating contractor for most of his life. He was on the Board of Education for Fort Plain School from 1972-1980. Mr. Carter was a former member of the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge #433 and enjoyed bowling and the Masonic Alleys. He was a former member of the Fort Plain Beagle Club, and a former member of the Fish & Game Club. He was a past Boy Scout leader and participated in the Christmas Bird count for many years. In July 1955, Mr. Carter married Carole Conrad. In addition to his wife Carole Carter of Fort Plain, NY, he is also survived by his daughters, Laurie Capece of Fort Plain, NY, Kim Carter of Fort Plain, NY; son, Jeff Carter and Betty Jean of Middlebury, VT; brothers, Kenneth Carter and Paula of Corning, NY, Norman "Scoop" Carter and Anne of Knoxville, TN, James Carter and Janet of Stevens Point, WI, Robert Charles Carter and Annette of Nelliston, NY; step-mother, Nancy Carter of Fort Plain, NY; step-brother, Kirk Bayes and Annette of Fort Plain, NY; grandchildren, Nicholas Capece, Lauren Capece, Riley Billings, Alexandria Carter; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Carter was predeceased by a brother, Robert Howard Carter.
