Obituary of C. Wendell Smith

Mr. C. Wendell Smith, 86, of Moyer Street, Canajoharie, New York died, Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Mountain Valley Hospice House in Gloversville following a long illness. Born on August 29, 1922 in Fort Plain, NY, he was the son of Chester R. Smith and Ann F. Shoemaker. He was a graduate of Fort Plain High School. He spent the majority of his life in the local area. Mr. Smith was most recently employed with the former Central National Bank, presently known as NBT Bank in Canajoharie, NY for over 45 years, retiring as Senior Vice President and Comptroller. After his retirement he sat on the Board of Directors for several years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in New London, Connecticut, serving in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and sportsman. On July 31, 1943 in Fort Plain, NY, he married Hilda Hawkins. She preceded him in death on November 10, 1992. Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Patricia and Salvatore Papa of North Chatham, NY; a brother, Calvin N. Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; a granddaughter, Courtney J. Landers of Castleton, NY; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Landers. Private Graveside Services will be held at Fort Plain Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
