Obituary of Dorothy Elizabeth Bennett

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Bennett, 94, of Donato Road, Canajoharie, New York died Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown, following a brief battle with cancer. Born on August 21, 1921 in Yonkers, NY, she was the daughter of Harold Brian Smith and Lillian Guyett Smith. She was a graduate of Yonkers High School and had been a resident of the Canajoharie area since 1989, previously residing in Long Island and North Bellmore. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. Mrs. Bennett was a member of St. Raphael's Church in East Meadow, LI, where she was also a member of the Rosary Society and Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and canning, especially making bread and butter pickles. Dorothy loved her children and animals. On August 5, 1945 in Yonkers, NY, Dorothy was married to William John Bennett. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1996. Her parents; brother, William McClusky; and sister, Lillian Smith predeceased her as well. Mrs. Bennett is survived by 4 sons, William J. Bennett, Jr., Michael T. Bennett, John P. and his wife, Tammy Bennett, Edward T. Bennett; 3 daughters, Lillian E. Santos, Mary E. and her husband, Robert Muggeo, Dorothy E. and George Ervin; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A prayer service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 10:15am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid, Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00PM at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc. Burial will take place at St. Peter's & Paul's Cemetery in Canajoharie in the Spring. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Bennett may be made to St. Joseph's Indian School, 1301 N. Main Street, Chamberlain, SD 57325.
