Bart and Jane and Jenny came to Caroga Lake for several summers and rented my sister's camp for a week or two. I always looked forward to visiting them when they were up there. He and Jane were very young for their ages even then. I would always go for a hike with Jenny to 9 Cornered Lake or Irving Pond. My sympathies go out to his family. He was a wonderful person. Love these photos of my neighbor Bart. Nice to see him with Jane - and with Amber, Jennie & David when they were kids. Brings back memories of when my eldest girls, Jacqui & Jessie, were childhood friends with them. My youngest daughter Julia looked forward to bringing him Christmas treats - he was always so gracious of the baked goods we brought. We will miss him!

Mr. Van Wie was my homeroom teacher in 8th and 9th grade, and I took General Science from him in 8th grade as well. I was not a great science student, but he did give me the first and only A I ever got in any science course during one 10-week marking period. First of all, it was an easy (for me, anyway) unit on extremely basic physics, dealing with simple machines such as levers, wedges and inclined planes. Secondly, he promised all of us that if we got a grade on our Science Fair project that was equal to or better than the average we were maintaining at that time, he would bump us up a letter grade. I was maintaining a B average at the time, and I would have been happy with that, but I also received a B on my Science Fair project. True to his word, he gave me an A for that period.
He was very easygoing and never yelled. I remember him saying, "Come on, come on" when things got noisy, and maybe clapping his hands to go with it.
Some of us called him "Black Bart," and that also has to do with the Science Fair. On the registration form, which was displayed along with your project, you put two small pieces of construction paper, one to indicate your grade and teacher and one to indicate which branch of science your project represented. The teacher piece for Mr. Van Wie was a black square, so "Black Bart" followed naturally. Not sure you could get away with that today, but back then we thought it was pretty cool. And he went along with it.

Great homeroom & biology teacher at Oneida. Had him for Bio in 9th grade, in 1962-63. Was not in contact with him after Oneida. I'm sorry he's gone but glad he had so many good years in retirement.

I had "Doc" for homeroom and math in 7th grade in 78-79. He was one of the teachers that made the transition to middle school at Oneida tolerable that year. I was in the last of the classes to have 2 years at Oneida as it shifted to a middle school from a junior high. I was actually thinking of him recently too.

I was very sorry to learn of Mr. Van Wie passing away today. "Doc" was my "Academic Advisor" at Oneida Junior High School from 1969 to 1972. Definitely one of the "cool" teachers! As I recall he was well dressed and used to get a new car almost every year. I remember a new '72(?) Oldsmobile Toronado that he had back then. I'm thinking he may have had other Toronados prior to that one, but I'm not positive. My condolences to his family at this tough time. Clint Sager
