Obituary of Viola B. VanWie

Mrs. Viola B. VanWie, 93, died on September 11, 2023, at the Wilkinson Center, Amsterdam, NY with her loving family by her side. She was born on June 23, 1930, the daughter of Lester P and Florence Brookman. She graduated from Fort Plain High School class of 1948, where she was a cheerleader and all-around popular gal.

She met her future Husband, Peter J Van Wie while working at the Arkell and Hall (Sack Factory) and they married on May 12,1951 and remained happily married for nearly 71 years.

She was a stay-at-home mom until their youngest started school when she went to work for Niagara Mohawk in the Canajoharie office. She worked there for 20+ years and retired in 1987. Pete and Viola retired to Florida in 2003 but returned to the area in 2016 to be nearer to their extended family. She is predeceased by her mother and father, two sisters (Mildred Lane and Irene Snyder) and her husband Peter J Van Wie.

She is survived by her children Joan Lawrence (Joe), Nancy Luscombe (Keith), Linda Sherer (Bing) and Kenneth Van Wie (Jane); 10 grandchildren and MULTIPLE great grandchildren (she lost count after 13).

 A Graveside service will be held on Saturday September 16, 2023, at the Fort Plain Cemetery at 1:00pm. A late luncheon will follow at Jim’s Irish Harbor.

Arrangements are entrusted to Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.
