Mrs. Margaret W. Roof, 94, formerly of West Street, Fort Plain, New York died Friday, October 28, 2011 at the Folts Home in Herkimer. Born on May 23, 1917 in Town of Minden, NY, she was the daughter of Deforest White and Edna Bauder White. She was a graduate of Fort Plain School and spent most of her life in the Fort Plain area. Mrs. Roof was a mother and homemaker. For a short period of time, while her husband was in World War II, Mrs. Roof worked for a bank in California. She was a member of the former Universalist Church in Fort Plain. Mrs. Roof enjoyed playing bridge. She played bridge with a close group of friends for over 30 years. In her younger years she liked to oil paint, painting various landscapes and sceneries. On April 19, 1941 in Sprout Brook, NY, she was married to William H. Roof. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1990. Mrs. Roof is survived by her son, Gregory A. and Janet Roof of Fort Plain, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:00am at the Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339 with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery.
