Obituary of Loisanna Hager Veeder

Please share a memory of Loisanna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Loisanna Hager Veeder, died Sunday September 22, 2013 at her home in Niskayuna, NY after a long illness. She is survived by three children, Carolyn Veeder Eberhard, (Anatol), Glenn John Veeder, Jr., and Mary Veeder-Civitello. She also leaves five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Loisanna was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Lt. Colonel Glenn John Veeder, Sr. (1985), granddaughter Suzanne Civitello (2000) and son Garry Lonny Veeder (Donna) (2008). Loisanna was born in Gloversville, NY July 26, 1915, daughter of Carolyn Wheeler Hager and John Hager, who were active antique dealers. Thus began her lifelong enthusiasm for all things antique. Loisanna was a graduate of Gloversville High School (1932), Pratt Institute (1935) and Teachers College of Columbia University. She taught art at Otego High School and later in Niskayuna elementary schools until she retired in 1979. She greatly enjoyed teaching her young students and proudly displayed their work at school and home. Loisanna organized art contests for her students, served as judge for them and was an amateur artist herself, active in Brush and Palette. Loisanna married Lt. Glenn John Veeder, an instructor in the Army Air Corp, November 19, 1942 in Ephratah, NY. They opened Veeder's Antiques on State Street and participated in local antique shows put on by the Schenectady Antique Dealers Association. After moving to Niskayuna (1955) Loisanna was a co-founder of the Antiquesters and made many presentations from her extensive antiques collections. Loisanna was an active member of the First Reformed Church, often serving as greeter and hosting exchange guests from Nijkerk, the Netherlands. She hosted meetings of the Garden Club and kept her assortment of gardening tools in her car so that they would always be handy for home or the lake house. She worked at the polls on Election Day as long as possible and often frequented the Senior Center exercise program at Van Antwerp School. Loisanna enjoyed travel, including a post-college art history trip to Europe, road trips out west, cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal and trips to Mexico, England, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and Israel. Since 1954 the family resided summers in their farm house on Great Sacandaga Lake. She and Glenn served on the Board of Directors of the Great Sacandaga Lake Association and strongly supported preservation of the Adirondacks. Loisanna was an enthusiastic fisherman and spent many evenings with her family down at the lake catching walleyes. She taught her kids to always eat what they caught. Burial in Ephratah Rural Cemetery will be private, with arrangements made by Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY. Donations in her memory may be sent to The Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, 897 St. Davids Lane, Niskayuna, NY 12309. On behalf of Loisanna, the family wants to express our enormous gratitude for the care and support given by Cheryll Squadere and family, Jacqueline Notar and her extended circle of health professionals, caregivers and friends during this difficult time.
