Obituary of Margaret Rae Austin

Mrs. Margaret Rae Austin, 91, of Center Street, Fort Plain, New York died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at her daughter's home, where she had been staying for the past few years. Born on November 10, 1922 in Hamilton, Scotland, she was the daughter of Walter Scott and Margaret Rae Scott. She was a graduate of Beckford Street School in Hamilton, Scotland. Mrs. Austin served in the Royal AirForce in the L.A.C.W, W.A.A.F. as a telephone operator stationed throughout England. On January 6, 1945 in Shrewsbury, England, Margaret was married to John J. Austin. In 1946 she came to America on the Queen Mary and moved to Fort Plain. John preceded her in death on July 30, 2012. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Helen Bailey, Mae Scott and a brother, George Scott. She was a communicant of the former St. James Roman Catholic Church in Fort Plain. Mrs. Austin loved traveling and camping around Canada with her family. She was known for her incredible cooking and baking. Mrs. Austin is survived by her daughter, Patricia Austin Klemme of Palatine Bridge, NY; son, John J. Austin, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy of Ashland, MA; 3 grandchildren, Dr. Jonathan Klemme, Megan P. Rae, John J. Austin, III; 3 great-granddaughters, Caroline, Charlotte, Emily Austin; two nieces and their families in Scotland and many nephews and cousins. Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery in the Spring. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Margaret Rae Austin may be made to the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, Inc., 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.
