Obituary of Laurette Regina Herting

Mrs. Laurette R. Herting, 86, formerly of Hickory Hill Road, Palatine Bridge and most recently of Coxsackie, New York passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018 at St. Peter’s Rehab & Nursing Center in Albany.

Born on July 22, 1932 in Pittsfield, MA, she was the daughter of Bernard Kirchner and Myrtle Plouffe Kirchner.  She was a graduate of Searles High School, Class of 1950.  She continued her education with a semester in NYC then graduated from The Culinary Institute of America, specializing in cakes and pastries, as a licensed Konditor.

Laurette was the owner and operator of Laurette’s Kitchen, making wedding cakes and fancy pastries.  She was a business partner and bookkeeper of the family farm, Sonhofen Farm in Fort Plain.  Mrs. Herting also worked for 4-H Cornell Cooperative Extension for over 20 years as a liaison for clubs.

Mrs. Herting served on the Board of Elections for Palatine Bridge for 6 years.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain.

Mrs. Herting for many years was in charge of the Manna House Meals, she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society of Our Lady of Hope, former President of Rosarians, Funeral Committee of the Church, member of the Farm Bureau, member of the Canajoharie PTA, and farmers of Palatine “Kitchen Conference” member.  She worked with her husband to establish Agriculture Districts and was a 4-H Club leader for over 20 years.  She travelled extensively and spent many winters in Florida.

On July 10, 1954 at St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church in Sheffield, MA, Laurette was married to Joseph Herting.  He preceded her in death on December 23, 2001.  She was also predeceased by her son, John Jerome Herting in 1959; 4 brothers, Richard, Jerome, David, and Eugene Kirchner; and a sister, Winifred Alexander.

Mrs. Herting is survived by her 4 sons, Joseph T. Herting of Canajoharie, NY, John G. Herting and Leslie of Stamford, NY, Nicholas D. Herting and Shari of Palatine Bridge, NY, Hans M. Herting of Palatine Bridge, NY; 3 daughters, Heidi Martha Beyer and Chuck of Mt. Horab, WI, Christa Desrosiers and Robert of Coxsackie, NY, Kathe L. Herting of Rome, NY; 13 grandchildren, Katrina Calhoun, Kayla Tedders, Lance Harding, Krystal Buddles, Nikki Lynn Herting, Daniel Herting, Anthony Joseph Pianella, Justin Pianella, Charles Desrosiers, Regina Desrosiers, Matthew Pianella, Therese Desrosiers, Katherine Desrosiers 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Alfano of Winsted, CT; several, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 7, 2019 at Noon at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, January 6th from 3:00-6:00pm at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317.  Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date.
