Obituary of Charles W. Wart

Charles W. Wart Sr., Canajoharie, NY passed away November 7 after a brief illness.  The son of Walter E. and Helena (Wiltse) Wart, he was born February 24, 1941 and raised on the family farm on Christian Hill Rd., Cooperstown NY. After graduating ‘Charlie’ (as he was known to his family), became a member of the US Army. He was honorably discharged from the Army andbegan working for the Canajoharie Manufacturing Company located on Mill Street in Canajoharie, NY, as a garment cutter. ‘Chuck’ (as he was known by friends) was employed there for over 30 years.  He was also a Rural Route Carrier for the USPS in Fort Plain for several years and was briefly employed by Millers in Amsterdam, NY before retiring.

Chuck enjoyed listening to country favorites like Johnny Cash, Kitty Wells and Hank Williams Sr.  He was a faithful, lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and loved watching football. He was an avid flower and vegetable gardener.  Chuck was famously known for always ‘puffing on his pipe’. 

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Madeleine ‘Jill’ (English) Wart, whom he married on September 10, 1983; his daughter, Suzanne (James) Schnettler; sons Charles W. Wart Jr. ‘CJ’ (Faith) and Fred Horning; his grandchildren Ian (Maddie) and Molly (Andrew) Feulner, Elizabeth (Paul), Daniel, Ellie, Juliana, and Jameson Wart, James, Angel and Alex Schettler and Shannon (Brandon) Hooper ; and great-grandchildren Julian and Coralie Hooper.  He is also survived by his brothers, Lowell (Suzy) and Hanford of Cooperstown, his sisters, Lois Thayer of North Carolina and Belle Ashline of Saratoga Springs; as well as many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents, sister Jane Pashley, brother Percy and brother in-law Larry Ashline.  Per Chuck’s wishes there will be no formal service.  Funeral arrangements were under the care of Houghtalng & Smith Funeral Home in Canajoharie, NY.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be scheduled for a later date.
