I remember so many years ago,(at least 60 + yrs), when I would come home to Canjo for a short visit. We would always end up in the Old Erie Blvd school gym to play some 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 . Some say that I had a master key to access the school ? (Maybe so, maybe not) We would play until we wreaked from sweat or shear exhaustion, then take a shower and then into the cafeteria for an ice scream treat or a snack, that Mrs. Hill left out for the "Weekend Redskins". On one of our "hoop classic'", outings, our custodian,Henry Arthur Diefendorf, popped his head in the Gym and asked " How'd you guy's get in here" ? I said that "Beansie" said we needed more practice. He was satisfied with that answer and he went back to his "boiler room office" for a Nip and a Nap. On our next foray to the gym,Mr. Dieisseroth himself, popped his head in and asked us" what are you doing here" ?. We told him the same thing,we needed the practice. He then asked us " can I play too ? " We knew that he knew, that we shouldn't be in there without any .."supervision"..He never question us, but when he left he "strongly" suggested we have a faculty member in there with us. So off the 4 of us go, Sonny,Chuck Becker,Steve VanDusen and myself..We escaped detection again. Wow, we thought Fred Schrader, the chief was looking for us.
NOW the "Rest of the Story"....did we have a key or not ? (maybe so,maybe not)... We actually 'borrowed" Henry's keys(without his knowledge) and went to Billingtons Hardware store and had a duplicate made. We returned the keys to Henry and told him we found them in the stairwell...(another untruth)... He thanked us and said he could have been fired if he didn't find them.He probably went back to his office for another "Nip and Nap" We never caused any damage or problems, we just had to play one more game at C.H.S. Sonny,it's you & I against Chuckie and Steve !! SKINS or Shirts ?? God's blessings to you,see you in the gym..

Sonny, More to come on the symbolic basketball that I've displayed. I just spoke to Joyce and gave her a run down. I will send it in more detail.
God speed, see you on Heavens Court. Larry Horning
