Obituary of Veronica Dwyer Hicks

Mrs. Veronica Dwyer Hicks, 85, formerly of Robinson Street, Canajoharie, New York died Sunday, February 19, 2017 at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 24, 1931 in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of Philip Ellis and Veronica Boerckel Ellis. She was a graduate of Bayside High School in Whitestone, NY, Class of 1949. She had been a resident of Canajoharie since 1973, previously residing in Holbrook, NY. Most recently Mrs. Hicks had worked as a Real Estate Agent for Mohawk Town & Country Realty. She also worked for Krutz Realty, and Triumpho Real Estate in Canajoharie, which is where she started her career in real estate sales. She was a Canajoharie Village Board Trustee; and a member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee. Mrs. Hicks was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. She served as Past Parish Council Member, Sunday School Teacher, Lector, and Eucharistic Minister for the Church. Veronica was an avid golfer and was a huge fan of the Washington Redskins. She was a board member for The Office of The Aging; President of American Field Service; founder of the Redskins Booster Club; Ambulance Attendant in Whitestone; Big Sister in the Big Sister/Big Brother program; Auxiliary Member of Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service; and a member of Catholic Daugher's of Americas Court Catherine Esther #1264; member of the Canajoharie PTA; Colonial Club Member; President of Canajoharie/Palatine/Root Community Chest; Co-Founder with Karen Wright of the Jim Durn & Mary Plank Golf Memorial. On April 19, 1952 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Whitestone, NY, Veronica was married to Robert Vincent Hicks. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1975. Mrs. Hicks was the beloved mother to 2 sons, Bruce and Lori Hicks of Fort Plain, NY, Michael and Mary Lou Hicks of Vestal, NY; daughter, Nancy Ann & Michael Cole of Canajoharie, NY; AFS daughter, Marta Obando of Costa Rica; sister, Bernice Janousek of Whitestone, NY; 3 grandchildren, Garrett Johnson, Bethany Hicks Hurteau, Esq. and her husband, Scott, Derek Vincent Hicks; niece/Goddaughter, Linda Lossmann; nieces, Phyllis Higgins, Judy Healy; nephew, Kenneth Janousek; special friends, Karen Wright, William and Loretta O'Shaughnessy. A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 10:15am at The Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY with Father Jim Davis officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 4:00-7:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place at St. Peter's & Paul's Catholic Cemetery in the spring. The family is asking that for those who are able, please enjoy a glass of scotch in memory of Veronica.
